STANDARD TRANSMISSION SERVICE & REPAIR

At FREEDOM TRANSMISSION and Automotive Service transmissions are our specialty! That includes the ever so popular standard transmission and 4 wheel drive transfer cases. Just like the automatics, standard transmissions come in all kinds of sizes, types and configurations. These days we have the front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, 3 speed, 4 speed, 5 speed and more, in-line, transverse, light duty, medium duty, heavy duty, direct outputs and the overdrives.

There are two main reasons that standard transmissions fail: bad clutch operation and poor lubrication. Both of which you have some control over.

  • Properly working clutch: A clutch that does not disengage properly puts excessive strain on the external linkage and internal shifting components related to synchronizing the shift. A lot of times this can be due to simple repairs such as adjusting the clutch or replacing a self-adjusting cable and hydraulic cylinders if so equipped.

  • Good Lubrication: It used to be, if you had a bottle of 90 W gear oil banging around, you could adequately lube any standard transmission. Since the car manufacturers have been squeezed to produce higher fuel economy, the standard transmission has undergone some changes making lubrication a more critical concern than it has ever been before. Light viscosity oils such as transmission fluid and 5 W motor oil are common standard transmission lubricants today. The hardening process was altered to make the gears compatible with these new lubricants resulting in parts that are brittle and proned to chipping and breaking if everything isn't just exactly right. The bottom line is the late model standard transmissions just cannot tolerate poor lubrication - low fluid levels.

Don't wait till it's too late! Come in on a routine basis and have your fluid levels checked and your transmission inspected for leaks. We'll test drive your car for noises and proper clutch operation.
